In our travels around New Zealand with school shows and preschool shows since 1988, teachers have often asked us for ideas for making and using puppets with the children. So, we created this Professional Development Workshop to offer some ideas.
The workshop is divided into four sections. First, we show the teachers some of our puppets and the ways we use them in our shows.
Next, we show them some puppets we make with preschool and school age children, and teach how to make them. The teachers then go to the work tables and make one or two puppets, with materials we supply.
After they've all made some puppets, we call the teachers together again to the front of the room, where we do a story with the teachers and their puppets as actors in the story. When they do the puppet making later on with the children, of course the teachers would be telling the story, and the children would be the actors with their puppets.
Bill then gives a short talk on different ways to use puppets with children, and we give out handouts with resource materials for the teachers to take away with them. These include patterns for simple puppets, and suggestions for many others. Scripts for one or two stories are given, with suggestions and sources for many others, plus ideas of how to use puppets with them.
The workshop is about two hours long, with a coffee break in the middle. As you can see from the photos, it's loads of fun as well as being educational!
